Wedding Cakes: 10 Tips for Getting Exactly What You Want

July 7, 2016

Amy McLaughlin Lifestyles -

One of the most enjoyable parts of the wedding planning process is getting to choose your wedding cake! Do you like the look of a traditional round cake? Or a more modern square? How many tiers depends on how many guests you're having. Are you a chocolate lover or more of a lemon-raspberry type? How about a NAKED cake?! There are so many options and, like many other wedding planning tasks, this one can get overwhelming. Below are some tips that can help you with getting exactly what you want in your wedding cake!

1. SET YOUR BUDGET & GET MORE FOR IT

Know how much you have to spend, and work out what you can get for your money. "Ask what your options are within your budget," says Renato Poliafito, cofounder of Baked NYC.

2. GET THE RIGHT BAKER FOR THE JOB

Choose a baker who routinely makes the sort of cake you want, because that's where their expertise is. "Don't push for things they don't normally do," says Erin McKenna, founder of Babycakes NYC.  Reputable bakers will turn you down if something's outside their comfort zone, but some won't, and down that road lies disaster.

Cakes to Remember won the Cakes category for "The Best of Boston Weddings" (cake featured on the right).

3. DO YOUR HOMEWORK

"Research before you decide on a bakery or a cake designer. The reliable ones will have plenty of referrals and experience," says Ben- Israel.

4. MAKE SURE THEY'RE INSURED

Bakers have had to handle everything from hurricanes to thieves to good old human error. "Life is unpredictable. Insist on hiring only licensed and insured vendors," says Ben- Israel.

5. GO LOCAL

"Choose a local vendor. Shipping is expensive and nerve racking," says Poliafito. The exception is if you're happy to pay for the baker and team to travel with the cake and ensure its safety!

6. LISTEN TO THE PROFESSIONALS

If they tell you something's not a good idea, listen. "It's not that he's trying to make your dreams go to hell by not giving you what you want," says Soriano. "He just wants to make sure you have a beautiful cake on the day."

7. SHARE YOUR IDEAS

Take inspiration to the appointment- color swatches, pictures, details from your wedding, including the location and what you're wearing. "Don't be afraid to tell the designer what you love," says Soriano.

8. DON'T JUDGE ON LOOKS ALONE

Always, always try before you buy. "All wedding cakes should look appealing, but it's all about taste at the end of the experience. Make sure it's delicious," says Poliafito.

9. FRESH IS BEST

"Ask when your cake be made," advises McKenna. "At a tasting, you're eating a fresh cake, but many caterers bake and freeze a week before to save time. Make sure you are getting a fresh one on the day of the event, too."

10. GET IT ALL IN WRITING

Include timings, delivery, add-on fees, rush charges, as well as the specifications for the cake itself. "Include any sketches or photos to illustrate the promised product," says Ben- Israel.
