Alex’s Team Foundation Spirit Ball
On Saturday, November 21st, over 400 philanthropists gathered at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel for the Spirit Ball to raise funds to support the Alex’s Team Foundation in memory of Alexandra Jane Miliotis’ valiant fight against her childhood cancer.
The foundation’s mission is to help children beat cancer through funding crucial programs in oncology nursing supports at Boston Children’s Hospital as well as providing for research fellowships in pediatric oncology for Harvard Medical School students to be mentored under Harvard physicians at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital. Under the guidance and leadership of Dr. Loren Walensky, Alex’s Team has given 48 medical students the opportunity to participate in this crucial research.
In just its sophomore year, the Spirit Ball was full of attractive and well-heeled guests, with many heeding the call to dress in black tie. The Ketel One Vodka sponsored cocktail reception was replete with bottle shaped ice luges for patrons to enjoy complimentary vodka beverages or a full bar with non-vodka libations available for purchase.
Guests enjoyed a live band and photo opportunities in front of the step and repeat, with many partygoers bidding on silent auction items prior to being ushered into the dining ballroom for a delicious three course meal and the evening’s program.
Alex’s twin sister Arianna and brother Geordie Miliotis offered a warm welcome to the room prior to her father, Mark Miliotis, Esq. providing additional remarks followed by Brent Kimball “Hall of Fame” honoree and David McCarthy. Additional speakers included nurse Kathleen Houlahan and Dr. Loren Walensky who both extolled the virtues of the programs funded through the Alex’s Team Foundation. Later, Jenny Johnson from NESN’s “Dining Playbook” riled up the crowd for the live auction, encouraging partygoers to sip and spend their money for this very worthy cause prior to guests heating up the dance floor to the tunes of band Protégé.
After more than doubling last year’s fundraising goal of $60,000, Alex’s Team is sure to reach this year’s goal of $250,000 thanks in part to this great event produced by Amy McLaughlin Lifestyles. Don’t forget to bring the spirit for next year’s event!
